The decision follows the approval of a report by an expert committee and a subsequent Cabinet decision. The new office is set to streamline immigration services in the region, including increasing the number of passports issued and expanding the daily output of regional offices.
Minister Wijepala revealed that the Cabinet has also approved the recruitment of personnel to operate the new office, which is expected to enhance efficiency. The Cabinet decision has already been forwarded to the Public Service Commission for approval, with an expected decision within two to three days.
Once approved, the Jaffna Immigration and Emigration Office will operate 24 hours a day, ensuring greater accessibility to services for the public. This move is seen as a significant step towards improving immigration services in the northern region of the country.
