The Colombo High Court has sentenced a Central Mail Exchange office assistant to 28 years of rigorous imprisonment, with the term to be completed within seven years, for accepting a bribe of Rs. 11,000. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 31,000 on the accused.
The case was brought to court by the Bribery Commission, which filed charges against the office assistant for soliciting the bribe from a businessman on September 19, 2016. The accused had demanded the money in exchange for facilitating the release of 30 imported CCTV camera units, bypassing customs duties.
The sentence highlights the ongoing efforts to combat corruption and uphold accountability within government institutions. The decision serves as a strong reminder of the consequences of engaging in bribery and unethical practices in public service.
