A protest was held today near the Attorney General's Department in Colombo, condemning the Attorney General's recent recommendation to release three individuals accused of concealing evidence in connection to the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge.

The protest, organized by the Young Journalists' Association, saw active participation from journalists, civil society activists, and social media supporters. Demonstrators gathered to voice their concerns over what they believe is a setback in the pursuit of justice for the slain journalist.

The protesters attempted to hand over a letter outlining their demands to the Attorney General but were blocked by the police. However, a representative from the Attorney General’s Department eventually accepted the letter, ensuring that their message was formally delivered.

Lasantha Wickrematunge, the editor of The Sunday Leader, was assassinated in 2009. Despite numerous investigations over the years, the case remains one of the most high-profile unsolved murders in Sri Lanka, and today's protest reflects the ongoing demand for justice for Wickrematunge and accountability for those involved in his killing.
