The Mount Lavinia District Court has issued a ruling requiring former Minister C.B. Ratnayake to pay a sum of Rs. 250 million in compensation for defaming Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament, Sujeewa Senasinghe. The case stems from statements made by Ratnayake during a televised talk show discussing the controversial Central Bank bond scam.

In the ruling, the court found that Ratnayake's comments were defamatory and tarnished the reputation of MP Senasinghe. The MP had filed the defamation suit, claiming that Ratnayake’s remarks made on national television were both false and damaging to his public image.

The court’s decision to award a substantial compensation underscores the seriousness with which it views defamation cases, particularly those involving public figures. Ratnayake, who has previously been involved in political controversies, is expected to appeal the judgment.

This ruling comes at a time when the Central Bank bond scam continues to dominate political discussions, with multiple figures from various parties being scrutinized for their roles in the incident. Senasinghe, in a statement following the verdict, expressed relief and emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions in public discourse.

Mr.Ratnayake's legal team has yet to comment on the court's decision, but it is anticipated that they will seek further legal avenues in the coming weeks.
