The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a plan to accelerate the passport issuance process and address the current shortage. During a press briefing today (05), Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa revealed that additional staff would be deployed to the Department of Emigration and Immigration to help speed up operations.

Following recommendations from an expert committee tasked by the Cabinet, the procurement of 1.1 million blank passports with “P” category chips has begun. The department plans to issue 4,000 passports per day, with 24-hour operations aimed at eliminating the ongoing delays.

In addition, the Cabinet has approved the hiring of retired officers on a contract basis, with the approval of the Public Service Commission, alongside the reassignment of current government officers, with the consent of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Governments.

This initiative is set to streamline passport processing and meet the growing demand for passports.
