The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today that the current government has decided to introduce several new amendments to the controversial Online Security Act. This announcement was made by the Solicitor General, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.

The updates come amidst ongoing legal challenges, with four fundamental rights petitions filed alleging that the process through which the Online Security Act was passed by the previous government was unlawful. These petitions were brought before the court by various parties, including Transparency International Sri Lanka.

The petitioners argue that the law, which was introduced under the previous administration, violates citizens' fundamental rights and raises concerns about potential abuses of power, particularly regarding freedom of speech and privacy. As a result, the government’s decision to amend the law is seen as a significant step towards addressing these legal concerns.

The Supreme Court is currently reviewing these petitions, with further hearings expected in the coming weeks. The outcome could have a lasting impact on the regulation of online content and the protection of individual freedoms in Sri Lanka.
