The Sri Lankan government is in the final stages of finalizing key appointments for its heads of missions abroad, with a number of experienced diplomats and political appointees poised to take on prestigious roles.

Former Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya is set to replace Mohan Peiris as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

Mr.Peiris, also a former Chief Justice, was recalled in November 2024, along with other political appointees. Jayasuriya’s appointment marks a significant step in Sri Lanka’s diplomatic representation at the UN.

Meanwhile, Yasoja Gunasekara, the most senior member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, is expected to be appointed as the High Commissioner to Australia, based in Canberra. Mahishini Colonne, a seasoned diplomat with experience as Sri Lanka’s Deputy High Commissioner to India from 2011 to 2014, is tipped to be appointed as the High Commissioner to India.

However, a number of diplomatic posts will be filled by non-career (political) appointees. Professor Janak Kumarasinghe, an academic from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and recently retired Air Vice Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force, are among those expected to receive prestigious diplomatic assignments.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that the final list of appointees is currently being prepared and will be announced shortly.
