India Allocates Three Billion Rupees for Sri Lanka in 2025 Budget
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented India's 2025 budget to Parliament on February 1, 2025, which includes a total of 20,516 million Indian rupees for the Ministry of External Affairs. Of this, 5,483 million rupees have been set aside for financial assistance to foreign countries, with Sri Lanka receiving the largest share.
This year’s allocation is part of India’s continued efforts to help Sri Lanka recover from its severe economic crisis, which has affected the nation's financial stability, access to essentials, and overall well-being. Indian authorities hope that this increased support will help alleviate some of the economic burdens faced by Sri Lanka in the coming year.
The allocation of three billion rupees to Sri Lanka is the highest ever for the nation in India’s recent budgets, underscoring India's commitment to being a key regional partner in the island nation’s recovery efforts.
The Indian government’s decision has been welcomed by Sri Lankan officials, who have been seeking international assistance to stabilize their economy and address critical shortages in various sectors.
This financial support comes at a time when Sri Lanka is making strides toward economic recovery, and the continued partnership with India is seen as a crucial element in the nation's efforts to overcome its current crisis.
