Sri Lanka endured their largest-ever defeat by an innings in Test cricket history as they were thrashed by Australia in the first Test match in Galle, concluding today (February 1). Australia dominated throughout the match, securing an emphatic victory by an innings and 242 runs.
The Sri Lankan team’s previous biggest defeat was by an innings and 239 runs against India in 2017, but this latest loss surpasses that, making it a historic low for Sri Lanka in Test cricket.
Australia, who batted first, posted a mammoth 654/6 before declaring their innings. In reply, Sri Lanka struggled and were dismissed for just 165 runs in their first innings, falling 489 runs behind the Australians.
Despite a valiant effort in their second innings, Sri Lanka could only manage 247 runs before being bowled out, handing Australia a dominant win with a day to spare.
This crushing defeat highlights the challenges Sri Lanka faces on home soil against a resurgent Australian side.
