Persistent rain on day three of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium has disrupted play and halted Australia's hopes of bowling out Sri Lanka. The day's play was possible for just one hour and 45 minutes, with Sri Lanka at 136 for 5 when rain intervened just before lunch. The umpires called off play for the day at 3:30 pm due to continuous downpours.

Sri Lanka, facing Australia’s massive first-innings total of 654 for 6 declared, struggled in response, with Dinesh Chandimal offering some resistance. The number three batsman remained unbeaten on 63 from 115 balls, including nine boundaries. Last recognized batsman, Kusal Mendis, was at the crease on 10 off 25 balls, with the pair adding 29 runs for the sixth wicket before the weather once again intervened.

During the brief first session, both Kamindu Mendis and Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva were sent packing. Paceman Mitchell Starc and spinner Matt Kuhnemann shared a wicket each. Kamindu Mendis, recently named the ICC Emerging Player of the Year, was dismissed by Starc for a brief 15 off 38 balls, after skying a shot that was caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

The umpires initially scheduled the game to resume at 2:50 pm, but heavy rain forced the cancellation of play shortly thereafter. The game will resume tomorrow at 9:45 am, with Australia hoping to wrap up Sri Lanka’s innings and claim victory in the first Test.
