The Election Commissioner General, Saman Sri Ratnayake, recently revealed that the long-awaited local government elections are expected to take place in April. Speaking at a program in Matara, Ratnayake outlined the anticipated timeline, noting that the final decisions on the elections will hinge on the passage of the Special Provisions Bill on Local Government Elections in Parliament.

Mr.Ratnayake emphasized that the passage of this bill is crucial for establishing a legal framework and ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections. He further pointed out the importance of the bill for resolving various legal matters and ensuring that the election process is fair and transparent.

During his address, the Election Commissioner General also highlighted the need to establish a dedicated court for handling election-related cases. This move, according to Ratnayake, would expedite the resolution of election disputes and ensure that the elections proceed without unnecessary delays.

"The establishment of a special court would help address any election-related challenges efficiently, providing quick justice to all parties involved," he explained, underscoring the urgency of the matter as the election date approaches.

As the country prepares for the local government elections, attention is now focused on Parliament, where the Special Provisions Bill is expected to be debated and voted on in the coming weeks. If the bill passes, the Election Commission will proceed with finalizing the logistics and conducting the elections in April.

With mounting anticipation surrounding the upcoming elections, all eyes are on the Parliament's decision, which will shape the future of local governance across the country.
