Heavy rain affects over 91,000 individuals across 17 districts
According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 27,381 families have been impacted, with the worst-hit areas spanning the Uva and Southern provinces, as well as Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, and Nuwara-Eliya.
Fatalities were reported in Polonnaruwa and Badulla, while strong winds in Jaffna caused injuries to three people. Fortunately, there have been no reports of disappearances or major incidents as of today.
In response to the disaster, the DMC has set up 13 emergency shelters, providing refuge to 876 individuals from 252 families. Additionally, 17,247 people have sought shelter with relatives after their homes were damaged, with 204 residences affected.
The government continues to monitor the situation, and relief efforts are underway to assist those in need. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant as the rain persists.
Meanwhile Meteorology department says Showers or thunder showers will occur at times in Uva and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Several spells of showers will occur in Northern and North-Central provinces and in Trincomalee district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere in the evening or night.
Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in Uva, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Matale districts.
Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slope of the central hills and Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Matale and Hambantota districts.
