In his speech, Premadasa expressed gratitude for the UK’s long-standing support towards Sri Lanka’s development, particularly highlighting the role of the Department for International Development (DFID) in advancing the nation’s economic and social progress.

He noted the importance of fostering closer ties between the two nations, underscoring the role of the Parliamentary Friendship Association in promoting legislative collaboration and mutual understanding.

The event, attended by notable dignitaries including Honourable Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagat Vikramaditya and UK High Commissioner His Excellency Andrew Patrick, served as a platform for discussing the future of bilateral relations.

Mr.Premadasa urged the UK to continue its support for Sri Lanka as the country navigates its economic challenges. “We hope this initiative revitalizes the bilateral relationship, fostering closer interactions between our legislatures and enabling Sri Lanka to achieve prosperity, equitable growth, and social justice,” he said, stressing the significance of international assistance in overcoming Sri Lanka’s financial difficulties.

The Opposition Leader also encouraged British investors to consider Sri Lanka as a destination for investment, offering support for projects across all regions of the country. “We welcome British investors, as well as governmental and non-governmental support, to promote Sri Lanka’s path towards inclusive growth and shared prosperity,” he added.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from both nations to strengthen economic ties and collaborate towards sustainable development, envisioning a prosperous future for Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom alike.
