In a statement today (23), Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education and Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, assured that the results of the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination would be released as soon as possible. Dr. Amarasuriya addressed the delay during a parliamentary session, emphasizing that the delay was a result of an unfortunate situation.

She explained that the evaluation of answer sheets is currently underway and confirmed that steps are being taken to expedite both the release of results and the admission process for students to Grade 06.

The delay stemmed from a controversy that erupted after allegations surfaced regarding the leakage of three questions from the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination. An investigation launched on September 20 revealed that while only three questions were confirmed as leaked, the matter escalated with protests from parents, some of whom claimed the entire exam had been compromised. As a result, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took over the probe, leading to the arrest and remand of a senior official from the National Institute of Education (NIE) and a teacher.

In response to public outcry, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake intervened, halting the evaluation of answer sheets until the investigation concluded. On October 14, Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, announced that the exam would not be re-conducted and that free marks would be awarded for the three leaked questions.

However, the controversy reached the courts, and on November 2024, the Supreme Court issued an interim order halting the release of the results. The court further ruled on December 31 that the decision to award free marks violated fundamental human rights, instructing the Commissioner General of Examinations to implement a suitable recommendation from an expert committee.

Following this ruling, it was confirmed that free marks will indeed be awarded to all students for the three leaked questions, in accordance with the Supreme Court's verdict.

Dr.Amarasuriya's statement assures the public that the finalization of results is a priority, and efforts are being made to resolve the issue promptly.
