Residents living near the Gal Oya river valley, particularly in the Divisional Secretariat areas of Ampara, Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai, Sammanthurai, Karaithivu, and Pottuvil, have been urgently advised to take necessary precautions as the situation around the Senanayake Samudra reservoir intensifies.
The Irrigation Department has warned that, should the ongoing rainfall continue, all five spill gates of the Senanayake Samudra reservoir may be opened within the next few hours, a situation that has never occurred before in the history of the tank.
Farmers and irrigation officials have confirmed that the reservoir’s water levels have reached unprecedented heights, raising concerns of widespread flooding in the surrounding areas.
Already, several low-lying regions within the district have been submerged, with at least 6,000 acres of paddy fields reported destroyed. In addition, 10,000 acres of paddy have suffered partial damage, threatening the livelihoods of local farmers.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging those in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant. Evacuation plans are being reviewed as part of ongoing disaster preparedness efforts to mitigate further damage.
This extraordinary event marks a historic moment for the region, and residents are urged to stay informed through local government announcements and take all safety precautions to protect life and property.
For any Emergency situation DMC asked public to call 117.
