In a significant move aimed at streamlining the process for Members of Parliament (MPs), the Sri Lankan government has announced plans to provide vehicles for all 225 MPs during their five-year term.

The new policy eliminates the need for MPs to obtain individual permits to import vehicles, which had been a long-standing practice. Instead, the government will ensure that all MPs are provided with vehicles, guaranteeing uniformity in terms of make and model, whether the vehicles are new or used.

Minister Herath emphasized that the vehicles will be allocated for the MPs' use throughout their term in office and will be of equal condition to prevent any discrepancies or complaints. The initiative seeks to ensure fairness and transparency for all MPs.

After the end of their term, MPs will have two options regarding the vehicles:

  1. Hand over the vehicle back to the government.
  2. Pay the vehicle’s depreciated price and retain it for personal use.

This move is expected to simplify the vehicle allocation process and eliminate concerns related to vehicle imports.
