The police have confirmed that an investigation has been initiated into an incident involving Member of Parliament Dr. Archuna Ramanathan, who is accused of obstructing traffic officers in the Galwala Junction area, within the Anuradhapura Police Division, on the night of January 20th.

According to police reports, Dr. Ramanathan allegedly interfered with the duties of the officers who were enforcing traffic laws.

The details of the confrontation suggest that the MP did not comply with the instructions of the officers, leading to a tense situation on the streets of Anuradhapura.

The police have stated that Dr. Ramanathan's actions may have been in violation of the Motor Traffic Act, and they are considering appropriate legal steps under both the Motor Traffic Act and the Penal Code.

In addition to the obstruction charges, the police are also investigating whether any statements made during the incident have caused racial discord or public unrest. Sources within the police force noted that there were concerns that the remarks exchanged between the MP and officers could have exacerbated tensions in the region, prompting further scrutiny.

The authorities have emphasized that the matter will be reported to the court, and further actions will be taken in accordance with the law. Dr. Ramanathan, who represents a significant constituency, has yet to publicly address the charges or offer an explanation for the altercation.

This incident has raised questions about the conduct of public figures, and many are waiting to see how the authorities will handle the case. As investigations continue, the situation remains sensitive, and both the police and the MP’s supporters are closely monitoring developments.

While the investigation is ongoing, the police have made it clear that they are committed to upholding the law and ensuring that any violations of traffic regulations or other criminal offenses are dealt with swiftly and impartially.
