Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake, announced that passengers have shown strong support for the government’s seat belt initiative aimed at saving lives.

Speaking during a public awareness campaign held at the Makumbura expressway entrance yesterday (01), the Minister said the government’s road safety efforts will be rolled out in several phases. He also engaged with passengers directly, who reportedly expressed willingness to cooperate with the initiative.

Highlighting key safety concerns, the Minister noted that most road fatalities in Sri Lanka are due to motorcycle accidents, and said steps are underway to revise helmet standards. Discussions with helmet manufacturers and importers are expected soon.

He also stressed the importance of enforcing passenger limits in three-wheelers and affirmed that road safety measures will be implemented with “love and understanding.”

Leaflets were distributed to drivers and passengers as part of the awareness drive.
