Severe Weather Displaces Thousands, Claims Two Lives
According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC), 20,300 individuals from 6,785 families have been affected by the extreme weather, which has also left three people injured in separate incidents.
The DMC reported that the worst-hit areas are facing threats of landslides and flash floods, with emergency response teams working tirelessly to assist those in need. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
In response to the mounting dangers posed by mudslides and rockfalls, the Kandy-Mahiyanganaya main road was temporarily closed on the evening of January 20. The closure, which impacted traffic between the Thannekumbura Junction in Kandy and the Hasalaka Bridge Junction, was enforced at 6:00 p.m. However, authorities have now reopened the road after assessing the situation.
The DMC continues to monitor the weather closely and has reiterated its warning to the public, especially those in vulnerable regions, to exercise heightened caution in the coming days.
