A significant flood situation has arisen in the Nena Kaadu area of Ampara following the breach of the Gal Oya River's protective bunds.

The breach has caused widespread flooding, submerging vast stretches of paddy fields in the region, particularly affecting the Dighavapiya colony.

Authorities report that many acres of crops have been inundated, with local farmers facing severe losses. The flooding has left families in the Dighavapiya colony stranded, prompting immediate relief efforts from local government officials and disaster response teams.

The breach occurred after heavy rains over the past few days, further exacerbating the already swollen river. Emergency teams have been deployed to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected residents. The situation remains critical, with concerns that additional rainfall could worsen the flood conditions.

The local administration has urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding. Meanwhile, authorities are working to reinforce the damaged bunds to prevent further inundation and minimize the impact on surrounding communities.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Disaster Management is closely monitoring the situation, with updates expected as efforts to contain the flooding continue.

A total of 135 individuals from 44 families in the villages of Senanayakepura, Samapura, and Suduwella are currently residing in temporary shelters as authorities.

The situation has become more critical with the prevailing rainy weather, which has significantly raised the water levels of the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir in Ampara.

The Senanayake Samudraya, which holds a maximum capacity of 770,000 acre-feet of water, is approaching its overflow limit. With water levels nearing 110 feet, there are growing concerns about the potential for the reservoir to breach its limits, which would have devastating consequences for the surrounding communities.

Local authorities are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely, while relief efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety and well-being of those displaced.

The families in temporary shelters are being provided with necessary assistance, but the threat of further flooding remains high.

As heavy rains persist, residents and officials are urged to stay vigilant. Evacuation plans have been put in place, and the government has pledged to continue providing support until the situation stabilizes.
