Due to a rapid rise in water levels caused by heavy rainfall and increased inflow from higher catchment areas, all seven spill gates of the Ulhitiya Mahaweli Reservoir have been opened.
The gates have been opened by 30 centimeters each, resulting in a water discharge rate of 77 meters per second. The excess water is being released into the Ulhitiya Oya.
The Irrigation Department has issued a public warning for residents on both sides of the Ulhitiya Oya to remain vigilant, as the water release could lead to higher water levels and possible flooding.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advise the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
Heavy rainfall in the region has prompted the authorities to manage the reservoir carefully to prevent any adverse effects downstream.
