The annual Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya, or New Rice Festival, was celebrated yesterday morning at the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, with traditional rituals and offerings marking the event. This significant festival is one of four major religious observances held annually at the temple.

The occasion celebrates the first harvest of rice, a tradition that dates back to the era of ancient kings. The ceremonial offering of the new rice to the Tooth Relic is a symbol of devotion and thanksgiving for the year’s harvest.

The rice harvested from the fields owned by the Dalada Maligawa is presented at the temple as an offering to the sacred Tooth Relic, an important cultural and spiritual act for devotees.
