Former MP Duminda Silva, who was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on January 11 due to a sudden medical condition, has been discharged and transferred back to the Prison Hospital.

According to Prisons Commissioner and Prison Media Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake, doctors have recommended that Silva remain at the Prison Hospital until January 15 for further treatment. Doctors will visit him there for follow-up checkups.

Silva was initially admitted to the general ward of Welikada Prison on January 10 before being transferred to the Colombo National Hospital the next day.

In 2016, Silva was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Colombo High Court for the murder of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra. During his time in custody, Silva has faced criticism for allegedly receiving preferential treatment, including accommodations in private hospitals and VIP facilities at prison hospitals.

Previously, the Commissioner General of Prisons had reached out to the Director General of Health Services regarding Silva’s health, leading to the formation of an 18-member specialist medical team to assess his condition.

The medical committee’s recommendation, submitted to the Prisons Department on January 10, stated that Silva no longer requires treatment in the prison hospital or any other medical facility. However, the report stressed the importance of providing immediate medical attention should any emergency health issues arise.
