The Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, has announced plans to set up new laboratories for medicine testing in Sri Lanka.

The initiative aims to enhance the quality checks on imported medicines and address gaps in the current system.

Dr. Jasinghe noted that investigations will also be launched into allegations regarding medicine imports by a blacklisted company.

“These tests should be conducted at various stages of quality checking. So far, testing has only been carried out when complaints are raised, which is not sufficient. The government is now focused on setting up one or two testing labs in the country,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of a robust medicine procurement process, highlighting that Sri Lanka’s centralized, state-run healthcare system manages a larger-scale operation compared to many developed nations.
