Today is Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day

The day honors the Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka, known as the Mahiyangana visit, which took place nine months after his enlightenment. 

During this visit, the Buddha resolved a conflict between two Naga kings, Mahodara and Chulodara, fostering peace on the island. Devotees reflect on the Buddha's wisdom and compassionate leadership that guided the island's inhabitants toward harmony.

Duruthu Poya Day also marks the establishment of the first Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka, with the construction of the Mahiyangana Stupa at the site where the Buddha delivered his teachings. This pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's history laid the foundation for the spread of Buddhism throughout the country.

Another key event associated with Duruthu Poya is the Buddha’s delivery of the Sakkapañha Sutta, a profound discourse given to Sakka, the ruler of the heavenly realms, during his visit to the Kelaniya region. The Sutta addresses deep philosophical questions about the nature of existence and the path to enlightenment, offering valuable insights for all Buddhists seeking liberation.

On this auspicious day, Buddhists engage in various religious activities, including temple visits, offering alms to monks, and attending prayer sessions.
