Veteran politician Gamini Kulawansa Lokuge, aged 82, passed away on Monday evening, June 30, 2025, according to family sources.
Mr. Lokuge was a longstanding figure in Sri Lankan politics with a career spanning over four decades. He served in several key Cabinet roles including Minister of Sports and Public Recreation (2007–2010), Minister of Labour & Productivity Improvement (2010–2015), Minister of Tourism (2001–2004), Minister of Transport (from August 2020), and briefly Energy Minister in 2022
A prominent member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party before later joining the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Mr. Lokuge represented Colombo District in Parliament since 1983, and held leadership roles on influential parliamentary committees.
