Legal officers from the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and the Department of Immigration and Emigration have been instructed to appear before the Trincomalee Magistrate on January 31, 2025, to make submissions concerning the 116 Rohingya asylum seekers detained by the Sri Lanka Navy in December 2024.
The order was issued by Trincomalee Magistrate Jeevarani Karrupaiah during a court hearing on Friday, January 10. The detained Rohingya asylum seekers, who arrived in Sri Lanka by sea, are currently being held at the Keppapulavu Air Force Base in Mullaitivu.
The case highlights growing concerns over the treatment of asylum seekers and the country's immigration policies. The court will review the legal status of the detainees and the actions of the authorities involved in their detention.
This case comes amid heightened scrutiny of Sri Lanka's role in handling asylum seekers from conflict zones, as international organizations continue to monitor the situation closely.
