The deadline for rice imports into Sri Lanka concluded at midnight yesterday, with a total of 167,000 metric tons (MT) of rice cleared from the port. The shipment included 66,000 MT of raw rice and 101,000 MT of parboiled rice, according to a statement from the Sri Lanka Customs spokesman.
The rice imports were part of a government initiative to ensure an adequate supply of essential food staples for the island nation. Customs authorities have confirmed that the clearance process has been completed successfully, meeting the set deadline.
The rice imports are expected to help stabilize the local market and address ongoing demand, ensuring sufficient availability for consumers in the coming months.
Sri Lankan authorities are closely monitoring stock levels to prevent shortages and maintain market stability.
