The Container Transport Vehicle Owners Association has reported that nearly 1,000 container transport vehicles are stuck at the Colombo Port due to significant delays in clearing imported containers.
Speaking to the media yesterday ( January 9), the association’s Chairman, Sanath Manjula, blamed inefficiencies at the Ports Authority and Sri Lanka Customs for the congestion. “Drivers have been forced to remain at the port for almost a week, creating severe operational challenges,” he said.
The delays are also expected to increase the cost of imported goods. The Wharf Workers’ Association warned that prolonged container clearance times could lead to a 20% price hike.
Deputy Chairman of the Wharf Workers’ Association, A.J.M. Jaufer, explained that the late fees imposed on institutions during these delays are passed on to consumers, driving up costs.
