She made these remarks while serving as the Chief Guest at the Ceremonial Induction of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) held on January 7 at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo. At the event, Prof. Udeni P. Nawagamuwa was appointed as SLAAS President for 2025.

Dr. Amarasuriya praised SLAAS as a leading scientific body representing over 5,000 members across various disciplines. She acknowledged its role in fostering science and technology to equip future generations to tackle local and global challenges.

However, the Prime Minister expressed concerns about Sri Lanka’s current research culture, stating, “Our research doesn’t always reward innovation and creativity. Too often, researchers focus on promotion schemes rather than the love of knowledge and curiosity.” She stressed that science education must inspire impact while maintaining rigor.

The Prime Minister also unveiled the government’s science and technology policy framework, “Quantum Leap,” which aims to ensure that Sri Lanka remains or becomes a hub of scientific discovery and technological progress.

Additionally, our government has unveiled a science and technology policy framework, underscoring our dedication to prioritizing science and research as essential drivers of economic recovery and national development."

Dr. Amarasuriya concluded by emphasizing the need for a vibrant intellectual community, robust research infrastructure, and opportunities for young scientists to build a scientifically empowered nation.
