In a significant step towards digitization, Sri Lanka has officially launched the Electronic Birth, Marriage, and Death (EBMD) service, enabling its citizens abroad to obtain copies of their birth, marriage, and death certificates through the embassy of their country of residence. The service was inaugurated today, chaired by Minister Vijitha Herath.

The EBMD service will begin as a pilot project in seven countries, with plans to expand to 65 countries in the future. This initiative aims to streamline and modernize the process of certificate issuance for Sri Lankans living abroad, ensuring greater accessibility and efficiency.

In a virtual launch event, embassies from the seven participating countries joined together via Zoom, showcasing the new digital process by providing copies of certificates to Sri Lankans residing in these nations. The service is made possible through a link with the data system of the Registrar General’s Department, with guidance from the Presidential Secretariat.

Minister Vijitha Herath emphasized that this digital initiative is the first major project under the government's flagship program to digitize public services. He stated that the new service would significantly ease the process of obtaining important documents for Sri Lankan citizens living overseas.

The launch marks a key milestone in Sri Lanka's efforts to modernize its consular services and improve the convenience of accessing essential records, particularly for the large Sri Lankan diaspora.
