The Deputy Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Wendaruwe Upali Thera, has called for the active participation of all citizens in the "Clean Sri Lanka" programme, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility for the country's future.

Speaking at a public event, the Thera stressed that national development requires the cooperation of every citizen, not just the country’s leaders.

Reflecting on the 77th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence, the Thera highlighted the nation’s turbulent history, which has been marked by challenges such as a 30-year civil war, natural disasters like tsunamis and landslides, and ongoing issues including corruption, crime, and environmental degradation.

The Thera pointed out a worrying trend among the country’s youth, who increasingly seek to leave Sri Lanka rather than build a future within the nation. "In terms of corruption and crime, Sri Lanka ranks 91st among 184 countries. Can such issues exist in a country guided by the teachings of Buddhism?" he asked, noting that while laws and punishments are important tools in curbing crime and corruption, they alone cannot eliminate these problems.

"The mindset and values of the people must also be uplifted," the Thera added, stressing that a transformation in the collective consciousness is necessary to create a cleaner and more prosperous Sri Lanka.

The "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative is aimed at addressing the nation’s environmental and social challenges, encouraging citizens to take an active role in the country's development. The Most Venerable Wendaruwe Upali Thera’s comments underline the importance of unity and moral reform in overcoming the hurdles facing the country today.
