The Office of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, has denied any involvement in the cancellation of a scheduled lecture organized by the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) at Peradeniya University.

Issuing a special statement, the Prime Minister’s Office stated, Dr. Amarasuriya has long supported academic freedom and democratic engagement, which are essential for fostering open discussions in educational institutions.

The Prime Minister’s Office clarified that the allegations suggesting the Prime Minister influenced the university’s decision are unfounded and misleading. No instructions were given from her office regarding the event. The government remains committed to upholding the autonomy of academic institutions.

Dr. Amarasuriya reaffirmed her dedication to protecting the rights of students and educators to freely engage in critical discussions, including those that critique government policies. She emphasized that universities must continue to be spaces where diverse opinions can be expressed without fear of suppression, stressing that open dialogue is crucial to maintaining public trust in the university community.
