Sri Lanka Monitors hMPV Virus Outbreak in China
In a statement released today (January 3), the unit confirmed it had received information about the situation and assured the public that more details will be shared after a comprehensive study and analysis.
China is reportedly experiencing an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (hMPV), five years after the Covid-19 pandemic. Reports suggest the virus is spreading rapidly, with social media posts claiming hospitals and crematories are overwhelmed.
Online videos show crowded hospitals, with users attributing the situation to multiple viruses, including influenza A, hMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19.
hMPV is a respiratory virus that causes infections in the upper and lower respiratory tracts. It affects people of all ages but poses the greatest risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of hMPV resemble those of the flu and other respiratory illnesses. These include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, it can lead to conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
The virus typically has an incubation period of three to six days, and symptoms can last for different durations depending on the severity of the infection. In some cases, symptoms may even appear similar to Covid-19. Sri Lankan health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to evaluate any potential health risks.
