Sri Lanka and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 16, 2024, to rehabilitate the Karainagar Boatyard.

The agreement, supported by a grant of Rs. 290 million from India, was signed by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner to India, Kshenuka Senewiratne.

The project aims to restore the Karainagar Boatyard, managed by the Cey-Nor Foundation Ltd, which is under the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, and operates under the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic, and Ocean Resources. The work will include civil construction, procurement, and the installation of machinery, equipment, and other necessary materials and services, according to the Indian High Commission in Colombo.

Once completed, the revamped boatyard will improve the livelihoods of local fishermen, create additional job opportunities in the region, including through small businesses near the boatyard, and enhance the availability of high-quality fisheries products.

India, with a development assistance portfolio of over USD 5 billion in Sri Lanka, continues to support people-centric projects across all 25 districts, benefiting countless Sri Lankans.
