First govt bone marrow transplant unit opens at Apeksha Hospital
This significant achievement was made possible through the financial support of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya and the dedicated efforts of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, and the Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Devalaya, Dishan Gunasekara.
The establishment of the new unit is a direct response to the increasing demand for specialized care for children undergoing cancer treatment at Apeksha Hospital. In 2023, the Basnayake Nilame pledged financial resources from the Kataragama Devalaya Fund to support the project, addressing the critical need for more space and advanced care facilities for young patients.
Originally planned as a three-story ward complex, the project was expanded to a four-story building with the invaluable labor contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Completed and opened in 2024, the new building houses the HSCT Unit on the third and fourth floors, offering state-of-the-art medical care for pediatric cancer patients.
This new unit is a beacon of hope for many families who previously had limited access to such specialized treatments. The Sri Lanka Air Force has also committed to the long-term maintenance of the facility, ensuring continued support for this vital healthcare initiative.
The HSCT Unit at Apeksha Hospital is poised to significantly improve the quality of cancer treatment for children in Sri Lanka, marking a historic milestone in the country's healthcare system.
