Government Rice Stock Begins Distribution through Cooperative Outlets

The State Trading Corporation (STC) announced that the distribution of government-ordered rice started yesterday (January 1) through Lanka Sathosa and Cooperative outlets.

STC Chairman Ravindra Fernando said the first shipment, which includes 780 metric tons of Nadu rice, has already arrived in the country. Of this, 200 metric tons will be sold through Lanka Sathosa outlets.

He further stated that another shipment of 5,200 metric tons of rice is approaching Colombo Port and will be distributed starting today (January 2). Tenders for an additional 26,000 metric tons of rice have also been finalized to meet future demand.

In the meantime, Sri Lanka Customs confirmed that 80,000 metric tons of rice imported by the private sector has already been distributed to the local market.
