The Department of Examinations has announced that the final decision regarding the actions to be taken for the first paper of the recent Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will be made public today (January 1).

Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, stated that the decision will be implemented promptly following the announcement.

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday ( December 31) that fundamental rights were violated by the decision to grant free marks for three problematic questions in the exam’s first paper, which led to a huge controversy in the country.

The court directed the Commissioner General to choose and implement one of three recommendations made by an expert committee as follows, Grant free marks for the problematic questions, Cancel the three questions entirely, Conduct an examination again.

This ruling came in response to a petition filed by students who sat for the September 15, 2024, examination and their parents. The petition called for the annulment of the first part of the question paper and a re-examination, citing a leak of the three questions prior to the test.

The decision to grant free marks had sparked widespread debate, ultimately leading to the Supreme Court’s yesterday’s final landmark ruling.
