New Navy Commander Kanchana Banagoda Assumes Duties

Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda officially assumed duties as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy today (December 31) at Navy Headquarters.

The appointment letter was presented to him yesterday (December 30) by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

Vice Admiral Banagoda, who has served as the Navy’s Chief of Staff since August 2024, brings extensive experience to the role. 

He has commanded various Fast Attack Craft, Ships, and Naval Establishments. Key roles in his career include Director of Naval Training and Commander of the Southeastern, Commander North Central, Commander Northern, and Commander Eastern Naval Areas.

In recognition of his service, Rear Admiral Banagoda has been awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama for gallantry and the Uththama Sewa Padakkama (USP) for his unblemished character and dedication.

Meanwhile, outgoing Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera was promoted to the rank of Admiral by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, effective from December 30, 2024.
