The government has decided to celebrate 77th National Independence Day at Independence Square in Colombo with minimal expenses, according to Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna.

The Minister emphasized that while the event should reflect the nation’s pride and dignity, efforts must be made to minimize costs due to the country’s economic challenges. Last year’s celebrations cost Rs. 107 million, and this year’s expenses are expected to be significantly lower.

Addressing the first organizing committee meeting for the 77th National Independence Day celebrations, held today (December 30) at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Minister stated that the public would also be given an opportunity to witness the celebrations.

Preparations for the event are underway, with a focus on balancing grandeur and financial prudence.
