The prices of vegetables have increased significantly in several economic centers this week, raising concerns among consumers and traders.

At the Dambulla Economic Center today (December 29), wholesale prices of key vegetables have risen sharply. A kilogram of beans is selling for Rs. 350–400, while green chilies have reached Rs. 800–900 per kilogram. Carrots, leeks, tomatoes, and other vegetables have also seen similar price hikes.

Retailers report that both upcountry and lowland vegetables have experienced significant price surges.

Retail prices for most vegetables range from Rs. 500–800 per kilogram, with green chilies reaching Rs. 1,400, black chilies at Rs. 1,500, and tomatoes at Rs. 600–800 per kilogram.

Traders attribute the price rise to seasonal patterns, as vegetable prices often increase after the Christmas season. However, they are optimistic that prices may stabilize and drop in the early weeks of the New Year as supplies improve.
