The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), which previously functioned under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), will be restructured into a separate police division, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala announced.

The revamped FCID will operate under the leadership of a Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG). This restructuring is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen the police service. Both the CID and the FCID will now operate under a Senior DIG, streamlining their operations for greater efficiency.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake chaired a meeting yesterday ( December 27) to discuss these structural changes, including the creation of a new “Central Crime Investigation Bureau” to oversee criminal investigative units nationwide.

Minister Wijepala emphasized that the FCID played a critical role during the Yahapalana government in addressing financial crimes. Under the new plan, provincial-level criminal investigative divisions, such as the Colombo Crime Division, will be established to clear the backlog of 29,000 complaints currently pending with the CID.

The Minister also noted that the central unit will ensure that even disregarded complaints from rural areas are investigated promptly and effectively.
