Sri Lanka Railway Department Marks 160 Years of Service

Celebrating 16O Anniversary of Sri Lanka Railways

A religious ceremony was held at the Fort Railway Station to honor this achievement, with newly appointed Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara leading the event.

To commemorate the occasion, a special train journey was organized from Colombo Fort to Ambepussa, retracing the route of the inaugural service that began on December 27, 1864. The Sri Lankan railway system, initially built to connect rural areas with cities and support trade, has since become a vital mode of affordable transportation for the public. For many, it remains the most economical way to travel.
