Sri Lanka Railway Department Marks 160 Years of Service
A religious ceremony was held at the Fort Railway Station to honor this achievement, with newly appointed Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara leading the event.
To commemorate the occasion, a special train journey was organized from Colombo Fort to Ambepussa, retracing the route of the inaugural service that began on December 27, 1864. The Sri Lankan railway system, initially built to connect rural areas with cities and support trade, has since become a vital mode of affordable transportation for the public. For many, it remains the most economical way to travel.
Since its inception, the railway has become an essential part of everyday life in Sri Lanka. It continues to serve as the most cost-effective travel option for citizens while also contributing to the country’s tourism industry. The iconic Kandy-to-Ella train journey, often recognized as one of the world’s most scenic rail experiences, attracts travelers from around the globe and showcases the Railway Department’s efforts in promoting Sri Lanka’s natural beauty.
The 160th anniversary celebrations underscore the Railway Department’s longstanding commitment to serving the nation and its critical role in shaping Sri Lanka’s connectivity, economy, and tourism.
