Sri Lanka Police announced plans to request courts to revoke or suspend the driving licenses of individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol for up to 12 months.

The announcement comes as police urge the public to refrain from drinking and driving, especially during the festive season.

In the 24 hours ending at 6:00 a.m. on December 26, police arrested 395 drunk drivers during a special traffic operation. Additionally, legal action was taken against:

    •    50 drivers for reckless driving,

    •    120 for speeding,

    •    1,262 for traffic violations,

    •    682 for driving license-related offenses,

    •    5,441 for other traffic offenses.

A total of 7,950 drivers faced legal action during this period.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) had previously ordered a nationwide special traffic operation starting December 20 to reduce traffic accidents during the holiday season. The police emphasized the need for responsible driving to ensure public safety.
