Sri Lanka to observe two minutes’ silence to remember tsunami victims
This solemn moment of reflection is part of the nationwide observance of National Security Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the tragic event. The main commemoration ceremony is taking place at the Disaster Management Division of the Ministry of Defence, under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Defense, Retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara.
In addition to the central ceremony, the Disaster Management Center has organized a series of commemorative programs at the district level to honor the lives lost and highlight the progress made in disaster preparedness and management since the tragedy.
Engine No. 50, which was damaged in the tsunami, was brought to Peraliya this morning. This was the same train that was hit by the waves on December 26, 2004. Relatives of the victims traveled from Colombo to pay their respects, and a floral tribute was placed at the tsunami memorial in Peraliya.
The public is encouraged to join in the nationwide tribute to those affected by the 2004 tsunami, remembering the strength and resilience of the people and communities that continue to rebuild and recover.
