The government has not yet made a decision on imposing new taxes on imported vehicles, according to Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayathissa.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday (December 24), he stated that the Finance Ministry will issue an official statement on the matter soon.

This announcement comes as interest from vehicle importers grows following the government’s decision to lift restrictions on private vehicle imports. Importers have urged the government to allow the import of hybrid vehicles from Japan, old up to seven years, to meet market demand.

Minister Jayathissa clarified that the Cabinet had not discussed this proposal during its recent meeting. He added that any such suggestions could only be considered if the Finance Ministry submits a formal proposal after consulting with vehicle importers.

The lifting of import restrictions has sparked debate, with concerns about vehicle affordability and the possibility of new taxes being widely discussed.
