The Ministry of Health has announced steps to collect blood samples from mammals in the Northern Province as part of its investigation into the recent leptospirosis outbreak.

The Epidemiology Unit stated that the samples have been sent to the Department of Veterinary Services for analysis.

In the Jaffna District alone, eight people have died from leptospirosis in recent days. With ongoing rainy weather, the Ministry warns that more cases may be reported in the region.

Over the past year, Sri Lanka has recorded about 12,000 cases of leptospirosis, with nearly 200 deaths. The disease spreads through contact with mouse urine or contaminated water and can enter the body through wounds.

Symptoms include red eyes, fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, and reduced urine output. The Ministry urges anyone with these symptoms to seek medical care immediately.
