Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Prof. Chandana Abeyratne, has announced plans to repurpose luxurious ministerial residences from previous regimes into accommodations for foreign tourists. According to the minister, these properties, many of which hold historical value, will be allocated for tourism purposes to generate significant revenue for the country.

Prof. Abeyratne stated that a special survey has been initiated to investigate the details of ministerial bungalows, including which ministries they belong to and the extent of the properties involved. This initiative aims to ensure transparency and proper management of these government assets.

Despite the change in the usage of these residences, Prof. Abeyratne emphasized that the policy regarding providing residences for government employees remains unchanged. He noted that 35 quarters had been reserved for ministers in Colombo, ensuring continued provision of accommodations for government officials.

This move is expected to contribute to both preserving the historical significance of the residences and boosting Sri Lanka's tourism industry.
