Sri Lanka Customs has confirmed that traders imported 67,000 metric tons of rice before the private sector's rice import deadline expired at midnight yesterday (December 20).

This import initiative aimed to address shortages of various types of rice in local markets and control recent price hikes.

The measure was introduced to stabilize domestic rice supply and ensure affordability for consumers.

Previously, the government has decided to extend the rice importation period until January 10, 2025, with a final decision to be confirmed at the Cabinet meeting on December 23.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced on December 19 that a Gazette notification formalizing the extension would be issued on December 24. Without this extension, rice stocks imported after the deadline, which ends at midnight yesterday (December 20), would need to be re-exported, according to Customs Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda.

Further steps are expected as authorities monitor the rice market and take action to maintain stability in the future.
