Government to Resume Private Vehicle Imports from February 2025
This decision is part of a structured programme to gradually reopen the country’s vehicle import sector, which has been restricted for an extended period.
The President explained that the reopening will occur in three stages. Imports of buses for passenger transport and vehicles for special services began on 14 December 2024. The next stage will allow vehicles for private use and goods transportation starting in February 2025.
Assuring Parliament that the decision will not lead to a foreign exchange crisis, President Dissanayake emphasized that the government, in consultation with the Central Bank, has carefully estimated the economic impact of vehicle imports.
“The vehicle industry cannot remain closed indefinitely. To strengthen our economy, we must reopen imports while managing their effect on the foreign exchange market,” the President stated.
“After extensive discussions with the Central Bank, the government has assessed the expected expenditure in Dollars for vehicle imports and its potential impact on the economy. Reopening vehicle imports is a necessary step to boost our economic recovery,” he emphasized.
This move aims to meet growing demand and revive Sri Lanka’s vehicle industry while maintaining economic stability.
